Woman fined for ganja possession

A woman was fined $15,000 after pleading guilty to a drug possession charge in a city court yesterday.

A visibly-pregnant Nicole Sawyers, 35, was charged after she was found to be in possession of four grammes of cannabis.

According to the facts presented in court, police, acting on a tip, went to an apartment at Kwakwani Park, where they found Sawyers in the company of a male companion. The woman, who was said to be acting in suspicious manner, admitted to the police that she was in possession of the illegal substance and handed it over to them.

After entering a guilty plea, Sawyers explained to the court that she went to the apartment to collect money from the father of her child when he caught her off guard by handing her the seeds, stems and leaves. She said she panicked and stashed the stuff in her waist.

She further related that it was after the police asked whether she had any illegal substance that she handed them the drugs.

Sawyers was subsequently fined $15,000 and ordered to do six months of community service at the Kwakwani Police Station.
