Funding approved for groups for Emancipation Day activities

Cabinet on Tuesday approved funds to be distributed among active African groups across the country to host Emanci-pation Day activities which are held on or around August 1.

Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman yesterday said the approval was in keeping with the government’s commitment to the promotion of cultural activities which reminds citizens of the contributions of all their ancestors to the nation’s development.

The cultural department of the Ministry of Educa-tion engaged the groups that have organised Eman-cipation activities in an attempt to help them plan effectively and this was lauded by Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Cabinet also approved the attendance of Anita Wilson from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to a workshop being held in Barbados in August. The workshop is intended to help natural disaster organisations around the Carib-bean with working knowledge of the response mechanisms employed by the Caribbean Development Bank to support vulnerable communities.

Trotman pointed out that the training comes on the heels of recent flooding experienced in Guyana and would augment the work of the CDC.
