Moruca hosts 11th Expo, ministers concerned at its ‘decline’

The indigenous community of Moruca located in Barima-Waini, Region One hosted its 11th annual Expo last weekend under the theme “One culture: many Livelihoods” but two visiting ministers voiced concern over what they said was a decline in its quality.

According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), this year’s Expo whose main objective was to “showcase the talents of the people and the rich flora and fauna of this indigenous community” had several activities chief among which was the Miss Moruca pageant.

Crowned Queen, Amanda Daniels of Santa Rosa prevailed over her four compatriots from the neighbouring villages of Santa Cruz, Kwebanna, Manawarin and Assakata. After participating in the various segments, Daniels came out victorious and received her sash from Minister of Indigenous People’s Affairs, Sydney Allicock. Minister in the Ministry Valerie Garrido-Lowe presented the other prizes.

Pepper sauce eating, archery, football and canoeing were among the other activities through which the residents showcased their various skills and talents.

Both Ministers however, expressed “concerns on the downturn of the event.” “I am a little concerned that much more local stuff is not visible, the craft etc… too much emphasis is on the political differences and this has resulted negatively on the expo,” Allicock said.

Allicock told the new Toshao and his council, to commence work immediately on strengthening this activity. “We need to get back to the old days of the Indigenous People working together,” he said.

GINA said that he cited the absence of various types of local handicraft, dishes and other items made by the indigenous people.

Further, Allicock said, work in the education and social sectors needs to be done and currently, the Ministry is collaborating with the Indigenous People’s Commission (IPC) and the Ministry of Communities to work closer with people, listen to their issues and share ideas in an effort to improve their lives.

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Director, Indranauth Haralsingh has said, plans are in place to improve the tourism aspect of the Expo as the GTA will soon be establishing a committee to strengthen the event and to ensure its effective management.
