National female cricket team off to contest regional tournament

The ladies of the Guyana National cricket team departed this morning for Trinidad & Tobago ahead of the WICB Regional Super50 Tournament which begins on Thursday, August 6, 2015.

President of Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Drubahadur, had a meeting with the ladies last evening where he pointed out that they are not short on talent and he is looking forward to see them bring home the title this year, stated a press release.

He added that they did an excellent job in the last two years reaching the semifinal and final. He further noted that they may feel pressured but they need to approach the tournament match by match, be discipline, focused and also have fun.

The President recalled that the weather was not good for the past couple of months and as such they couldn’t get in practice matches. Nevertheless, GCB saw that they had practice sessions at the Guyana National Stadium and the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence Hostel during their encampment, further assuring the players that GCB is confident that they will come back victorious.

Chairman of the Senior Selection Panel, Rayon Griffith wished the ladies a successful tournament and told them to go out there and play competitive and professional cricket. He added that regardless of the situation, they must always be disciplined because when one person misbehaves, she tarnishes the entire team and their country. Griffith also called on the players to respect their coach and manager and adhere to their rules.

Six teams will be competing in the tournament; namely; Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, North Windward Islands and South Windward Islands. Each of the teams will play the other once in a round-robin competition and the two teams accumulating the most points will contest the final on Sunday, August 16, 2015.
