Colts maul Melanie Patriots

Colts dismissed Melanie Patriots by an 83-46 score line in an Open Divisional matchup when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League Qualifying Knockout Tournament continued on Wednesday.

Shelroy Thomas top scored with 22 points at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in the win while Rayon Cummings was the next best scorer with 15 points. Assisting with seven and five points were Kurt English and Dave Causway respectively.

On the other side, Sherlon Legall netted a team high 16 points whilst Floyd Arthur and Ashton Adams recorded 15 and seven points correspondingly.

Trailing 13-11 after the opening period, Colts outscored Patriots 16-5 to take a commanding 27-18 lead going into the half-time interval. Thomas shot his way to five points in the quarter while Colbert Thornhill and Cummings recorded four and three points each.

For the East Coast of Demerara unit, Arthur netted three points. Colts then extended their advantage in the third period, recording a mammoth 30 points while restricting Patriots to 14 to take a 57-32 lead into the final stanza.

Thomas was the primary scorer in the quarter with 15 points inclusive of three daggers from beyond the arc while Cummings and Errol Dryden netted four points each. On the other side, Nyambekerie Bacchus, Arthur and Legall netted four points apiece.

With the matchup already decided, Colts would outscore Patriots by a 26-14 margin to seal the win. English, Cummings and Shane Webster netted six, six and four points each in the period for Colts while Arthur top scored with eight points for Patriots.

In the second matchup of the section, East Coast of Demerara giants Plaisance Guardians overcame Knights by a 69-64 score line.

Nikkoloi Smith shot his way to a game high 35 points inclusive of six three pointers while Nicholas Cassious, Trenton Woolford and Solomon Matthews supported with eighth, seven and four points respectively.

For the loser, Owan Walton top scored with 20 points while Akil Lewis and Kester Gomes chipped in with 17 and 13 points respectively. The opening period was a closely contested affair as Guardians edged ahead by a 16-15 margin.

Smith top scored in the quarter with nine points while Cassious recorded three points. On the other side, Walton netted eighth points while Lewis scored three points. The momentum changed in the second stanza as Knights outscored Guardians 22-18 to take a 37-34 half-time lead.

Lewis and Gomes led the way with seven points each while Walton supported with six points in the assault. For Guardians, Smith was the primary scorer with seven points while Kwame Fox assisted with three points.

Knights then maintained their marginal lead in the third quarter as both teams scored 11 points to go into the final period ahead 48-45. Walton top scored for the Georgetown unit with five points while Dennis Corbin and Gomes registered three points each.

On the other side, Smith netted four points and Woolford scored three points. However the final period was all about Smith who propelled Guardians to the hard-fought win by netting an impressive 16 points in the period as they outscored Nights 24-16.

Upon the conclusion of the first round of knockout fixtures, the event will continue on August 7th with three programmed matchups pending the results of the earlier fixtures.
