Family seeking public’s help to fund teen’s vocal cords surgery

The family of a 15-year-old Friendship Secondary School student has turned to the public for financial assistance to afford him the opportunity to undergo much needed surgery in Colombia for papilloma on the vocal cords.

Stephon Welch has had hospital visits for the medical condition since he was 8-years-old, when test results revealed he had a growth on his vocal cords (Papilloma with Sq. epithelium).

Two months after finally being able to put a name to his condition, Welch had to undergo an emergency tracheostomy as he returned to the hospital with a stridor (a harsh vibrating noise when breathing, caused by obstruction of the windpipe or larynx.)

His histology showed chronic inflammation with polyp formation on his vocal chords with a web formation.

As a result, he was put on an anti-viral treatment and was advised to undergo laser treatment for the condition. Even though he has had his tracheostomy tube changed repeatedly and the papilloma on his laryngeal inlet excised twice with excision of web formation, the condition recurs.

The family has indicated that the much needed laser surgery is unavailable in Guyana. After years of trying to locate a medical facility equipped to treat the condition, the family stumbled on a treatment centre in Colombia (Clinica Colsanitas), where he may be required to undergo as many as three surgeries.

The estimated total for the treatment is US$20,461.83 ($4,239,748).

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the lad’s sister, local songstress Tennica De Freitas appealed for the public’s assistance in securing the funds for her brother’s much needed surgery.

“We the family of this young lad are sincerely seeking your assistance in any way possible to help us accumulate the required amount for his treatment.
