Housing gets $1.9b in budget

For this year, government has allocated $1.9 billion for the housing sector which will be used primarily to continue infrastructure works in existing housing areas.

Minister of Finance Winston Jordan told the National Assembly in his 2015 Budget presentation that $1.6 billion has been allocated to continue infrastructure works including roads, drains and structures, in housing areas such as Providence, Farm, Little and Great Diamond, Eccles, Sophia, Adelphi, Bloomfield and Cumberland.

He said that government will commence the planning phase for the establishment of a new, cohesive community and the consolidation of the 1000 homes project at Perseverance on the East Bank Demerara. Additionally, government will focus on the construction of the fifth batch of 50 two-bedroom houses at Perseverance. Further, a total of 200 serviced lots will be allocated at Diamond/Grove, Farm, Covent Garden, Herstelling and Providence.
