Sailor on attempted murder charge

A man who allegedly wounded another while defending himself, found himself facing a charge of attempted murder in a city court yesterday.

It is alleged that on August 7, at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, Myron Fraser unlawfully and maliciously inflicted wounds on Brutus Taylor with the intention to murder.

Fraser, of Lot 1418 17th Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, is a sailor with Prittipaul Investments, and also works as a mason while on shore.

Fraser’s attorney, Leslie Sobers, told the court that the complainant, Taylor had held his client by the neck and wouldn’t let go.

Fraser was then forced to use whatever means was necessary to free himself of Taylor’s grasp. Sobers stated that at no time during the altercation did Fraser ever intend to wound Taylor.

The attorney further related that his client was unaware he was being charged with attempted murder, and had been under the impression that he was summoned to court to answer to a charge of wounding.

Furthermore, any injuries that Taylor sustained at the hands of Fraser had been in self-defence.

Sobers went on to tell the court that Fraser had also sustained wounds at the hands of the complainant. He stated that Fraser now has a scar across his left breast where Taylor tried to stab him in the region of his heart, as well as lacerations on his back. He said that the police made no attempt to take a report from Fraser, nor was he ever taken to the hospital to receive treatment.

Magistrate Ann McLennan, after hearing the details of the case ordered it adjourned to August 27th.
