Departing EU envoy says optimistic about Guyana’s future

Outgoing Head of the European Union Delegation to Guyana, Ambassador Robert Kopecký says he is very optimistic about the future development of Guyana.

A release from the Ministry of the Presidency yesterday said that the Ambassador expressed these sentiments following a farewell visit with President David Granger, at the latter’s office.

“I was pleased to tell him (President Granger) that I see a lot of potential for further development nationally and for closer cooperation with the neighbours of Guyana,” Kopecký said.

The Ambassador added that Guyana’s geographical location can be seen as a plus for both the Caribbean and the European Union.  This he said is especially beneficial as Guyana is a neighbour of Suriname, a former colony of Holland. This, Kopecký said creates a potential link between CARICOM and countries within the European Union.

“I’m glad that the two Presidents (Guyana and Suriname) met last week and they are talking about cooperation, because you can create new clouds of bigger bodies of cooperation, both on the continent and the Caribbean,” he added, according to the press release.

The Ambassador said the new administration’s plans to move towards green energy should be applauded.

He noted that Guyana has significant potential for the development of sustainable energy.

The outgoing Ambassador served as the resident Ambassador to Guyana as well as the non-resident Ambassador to Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and the Dutch Overseas Countries and Territories, for the past four years.
