The opposition should be allowed ample time to do its job in Parliament

Dear Editor,

The new government deserves the time and space to do its job, each of which has been afforded.

Even one of the country’s newspaper columnists, notable for criticizing the previous government, has morphed into an AFC columnist and is busy looking the other way when not focusing on Dr Cheddi Jagan.

It is a setback, therefore, to learn that this coalition government of national unity, which is what it advertised itself as during the elections, is now resorting to censorship inside the National Assembly to stop the opposition.

The opposition, which has duties to all Guyanese, should be allowed ample time to do its job; that is, critique the budget presented by the government.

This motion to reduce the opposition’s time for critique, brought by none other than an AFC member, is in effect a gag on the people in their own house.

Yours faithfully,

Rakesh Rampertab
