Penalty shoot-outs dominate ‘King of the Streets’ football

On a night highlighted by penalty shoot-outs, Alexander Village recorded an outright win when the inaugural RDE Vibes and Sparta Boss ‘King of the Streets’ Football Tourney commenced on Saturday.

Hosted at the Sparta Boss Tarmac in East La Penitence, Alexander Village downed North East La Penitence 1-0 in their group showdown.

Leon Yaw was the difference on the night, netting in the second minute with a first time finish into the right corner after collecting a left-sided pass on the right side of the field.

The sixth showdown witnessed West Front Road-Gold is Money defeating Showstoppers 3-2 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 1-1. With the winner unable to be found at the end of normal time, the first round of the shoot-out would finish 1-1 as both sides netted.

It would then become 2-2 in the second round as Simon Emmanuel scored for the West Demerara unit while Randolph Wagner scored for West Front Road.

The third round then saw Showstoppers failing to score as Marvin Josiah struck his effort wide of the left corner.

The Georgetown unit made no such mistake in their third effort, scoring in the form of Hubert Pedro to seal the win. Prior to the penalty shoot-out, Showstoppers took the lead in the sixth minute compliments of a left-sided strike from Emmanuel. Nonetheless West Front Road quickly responded four minutes late through Wendell Pedro who slotted his effort into the centre of the net from the right side of the field, after collecting a left-sided pass from Wagner.

In other results, Queen Street Tigerbay edged fierce rivals Albouystown 1-0 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended nil-all while Broad Street edged Festival City 1-0 via a penalty shoot-out following a score-less regulation time interval. Also recording a win was Samaroo Dam who defeated Globe Yard 1-0 on sudden death kicks after normal time finished 0-0 in the fourth fixture while in the event opener, Alberttown downed Showstoppers-B 1-0 on sudden death kicks, after both teams failed to score in normal time.

Leopold Street and Agricola were both disqualified from the event for fighting. Prior to the fixture’s end, Leopold Street was ahead 1-0 in the second period.

The winner of the tournament will walk away with $400,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth-place sides will receive $150,000, $80,000 and $20,000 correspondingly.
