Linden blaze caused by child playing with matches

A fire on Sunday evening which nearly claimed the lives of three children at Victory Valley, Linden was caused when one of the children set fire to a mattress.

According to Fire Chief Marlon Gentle, the five-year-old child was playing with matches when he dropped a lit match on the bed causing the conflagration.

Stabroek News understands that the children were left at home alone by their mother who went out to play Bingo.

Neighbours said the children were often locked alone in the home. When the fire started the neighbours were forced to break a section of the house which was locked.

Witnesses report that one individual had to go into the burning building to remove the children since they were afraid of disobeying their mother, who had instructed them not to leave the house.

The children’s mother who was reportedly in One Mile Wismar, Linden when the fire began returned after the fire had been contained.

When challenged about her treatment of her children the mother reportedly abused her neighbours including the man who rescued the children and left the area.

The fire started at approximately 18:00 hrs and engulfed the house in mere minutes.
