‘Staged robbery’ Corentyne businessman to be charged

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) yesterday advised that charges be laid against a Crabwood Creek, Corentyne businessman who was allegedly behind a staged robbery at his home and two others who played varying roles in the execution of the scheme.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that the trio will be making their first court appearance at a Berbice Magistrate’s Court today.

He said too that police are looking for three men inclusive of a known criminal who have been identified as being part of the home invasion which occurred on Sunday.

Reports are that the 42-year-old businessman hatched an elaborate plot to win back his wife after their relationship began to sour due to ongoing domestic problems which led to them separating. To make the “armed robbery” appear real, he had the men he hired to invade his house beat him up. They were also instructed to beat his wife and tumble the house and steal valuables so as to make it seem like a robbery.

Police received a report on Sunday that a robbery was committed around 3 am on a house at Grant Crabwood Creek by men armed with “long guns”. However, acting on a tip off police on Tuesday arrested a taxi driver who during intensive questioning told ranks about the plot hatched by the businessman. He detailed how the businessman approached him and outlined his plan which was to break into his home and terrorize him and his wife. The taxi driver who was not up to the task contacted a known criminal who resides at Rose Hall. They all met up subsequently where the plan was discussed in more detail.

The taxi man told detectives that the businessman over a detailed house plan which showed the location of the 12 CCTV cameras in his home. He also indicated that he wanted certain phrases recited during the attack to give it a more genuine appearance. The businessman promised the taxi driver $200, 000 once the task was complete.

He related how the businessman transported him and the others to the Crabwood Creek area and how they waited for hours before entering the house through a back window. Once inside they began inflicting blows on the businessman whose wife ventured outside after hearing his screams. They then turned on her and dealt her a severe beating which has left her hospitalized.

On Sunday it was reported that in excess of $200, 000 was stolen from the businessman while the wife was relieved of US$10, 000.

As a result of the story told by the taxi driver the businessman and another suspect were arrested.
