Couple charged with assault on tenant

A husband and wife were yesterday placed on bail after they denied assaulting their tenant.

Paul and Faye Fernandes appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where they pleaded not guilty.

The couple was accused of assaulting Keisha Greig on September 6, at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara.

According to the prosecution’s case, while the Fernandes and Greig live in different apartments in the same house, they are not on speaking terms.

It is alleged that on the day of the assault, Faye Fernandes saw Greig’s tub on one of her benches and proceeded to move it. After Greig noticed that the woman had moved her tub, she confronted her and an argument started that culminated in the two women punching and kicking each other.

After Paul Fernandes noticed the fight, he allegedly joined and chucked Greig several times. It is further alleged that after the fight the couple continued to curse and verbally abuse the woman and Paul subsequently disconnected Greig’s water and electricity. The matter was reported to the police and the couple was charged.

Paul was placed on $60,000 bail and Faye was placed on $45,000 bail by Magistrate Ally, who set October 23 for their next court date.
