Teen needs assistance for kidney transplant

A single parent mother of five is pleading with the public for assistance so that her eldest child who is suffering from kidney failure can undergo a transplant.

Nichola Belle, the mother of 14-year-old, Alpha Charles of Second Street, Campbellville said that a cousin is willing to provide a kidney. However, she is under considerable financial strain to raise US$6,000 so that he can successfully undergo the transplant as soon as possible at a private hospital in Guyana.

Belle noted that this was cheaper than if it had to be done abroad and said she plans on visiting the Ministry of Public Health to request help today.

She told Stabroek News yesterday that during 2011 her son started to experience swelling to his legs, ankles and abdominal pain. Within a week she decided to take him to the hospital for a checkup where tests were conducted and it was revealed that he has nephrotic syndrome, a condition that is caused by any of a group of diseases that damage the kidneys’ filtering system.

Since then, the former Campbellville Secondary School student has been unable to attend school as he has been in and out of hospital for medical treatment.

Charles is currently admitted at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) Male Surgical Ward where his condition has deteriorated and as such his mother was informed that he needs to undergo a transplant.

Anyone willing to make donations towards the teenager for his transplant can do so at Republic Bank account number 175-029-8 or contact his mother on 685-4667.
