Four injured in collision near Camp Ayanganna

Four persons were injured when two cars collided near Camp Ayanganna, in Georgetown, on Friday evening.

Those injured were Lashana McPherson of Pike Street, Kitty; Brian Jordan of Second Street, Alexander Village; Charles Blair of Kuru Kuru, Linden Highway and Deodat Ramlall. They were picked up by Guyana Defence Force (GDF) medical staff and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

According to the driver of one of the cars involved in the accident, he was transporting Ramlall to GPH after the man had been assaulted by two men, who attempted to rob him at Melanie, East Coast Demerara.

The driver, who only gave his name as Khan, said he was a line at the traffic light just prior to the accident. Khan said once the light indicated that he could go, he drove off. However, at the same time the other driver drove into his path from the opposite direction. “If he didn’t jump that traffic light, the accident coulda never happened,” Khan said.

He added that he recently purchased his car and still has outstanding payments to make on it.

Meanwhile, a relative said Ramlall had gone to buy food with a friend when they were attacked and robbed. Ramlall was standing on the road beside his car while his friend went to make the purchase in the restaurant, when the men pounced on him. The men attempted to steal Ramlall’s car and they struggled with him to get the key for the vehicle. Because he resisted, the relative said, the bandits assaulted him.

The relative said one of Ramlall’s arms had been broken previously and that arm was again injured during the assault and later during the accident.

Ramlall’s friend, on returning with the food, discovered him on the road. The bandits had fled by then. However, Stabroek News was told that one of the men was arrested yesterday.

Ramlall has since been discharged from the hospital but he is unable to speak as he sustained injuries to his face and jaw. He also sustained injuries to his leg during the accident, the relative stated.

Meanwhile, Khan, who was instructed to report the police yesterday, has been locked up and refused bail; the police said the other driver is still hospitalised with a neck injury.

Khan’s relatives are distressed that he was not released on bail although he was not responsible for causing the accident. They also noted that he was just helping to transport the injured Ramlall to the hospital and pointed out that he has fully cooperated with the police as evidenced by the fact that he opted to report to the station yesterday.
