It is time Rusal obeyed the laws

Dear Editor,

It has been six years since fifty-seven workers and five years since a further five were wrongfully dismissed by the Bauxite Company of Guyana Incorporated (BCGI) Rusal.

The manager at the time broke the labour law when he dismissed all of the union office bearers and every outspoken worker. He also terminated the life of the collective labour agreement and the union. To date the workers at BCGI do not have union representation, because management brought in another union and the workers said they wanted the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union back; all of the above is against the law.

There is a close relationship between former president Jagdeo and Rusal hence we got no justice from the PPP/C government.

There is now a new government, and we are asking the President to intervene on our behalf, because we have had our constitutional rights trampled upon by this foreign company. Rice and sugar have problems and the workers are being protected; does the constitution not give us, the bauxite workers, the same protection? It is time Rusal be made to obey the laws and honour the obligation to the workers.

Yours faithfully,
Lennox Smith
