Venezuela’s show of strength is provocative

Dear Editor,

Venezuela’s show of strength by parading armour at its borders with Guyana is aggressive and provocative. But I do not think President Maduro is reckless enough to go beyond that, since he still plays on the world stage and other players are looking on.

Maduro’s alliance with other nation states is tenuous at best. Maduro is diverting attention from Venezuela’s shaky administration and poor economy. Any attack by Maduro on Guyana will sound his political death knell.

But we shouldn’t be too worried. We need to have every confidence in our President.

He is a military strategist and I feel sure that he will outmanoeuvre his Venezuelan counterpart. We have been through Ankoko and New River Triangle. We will survive Venezuela.

Incidentally, with respect to crime, what has happened to ‘Stop and Search?’ Is that no longer a viable police approach to crime-fighting? Or is the Commissioner of Police prohibited from using it?

Yours faithfully,
Charles Selman
