Cop charged over pedestrian crossing accident

Parminie Persaud, 11, a student of Uitvlugt Secondary School who was struck down on a pedestrian crossing by a cop is recovering slowly at her Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo home.

She suffered injuries to her right hip, which hurts sometimes when she walks, and to her forehead where she had gotten four stitches. Her sight has also been affected.

Her grandmother, Rampattie Lall, told Stabroek News that Parminie who is under her care, almost lost two of her teeth that are “shaking” and may eventually have to be extracted.

Lall is happy that the police constable, Chapman had been charged for the offence.

He had appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty of the offence.

Chapman was placed on $50,000 bail and is expected to return to court on October 13. Stabroek News was told that the officer has remained on duty. A police source said that he would have been interdicted “only if the commissioner so directs.”

Parmini, a Grade 7 student, was already halfway on the crossing when the police car, PRR 2032 passed a line of vehicles that had stopped to facilitate schoolchildren and struck her.

The child was reportedly flung “about six feet up in the air” before landing facedown a short distance away.

She was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in an unconscious state and was treated before being transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Lall said that even though the child was still in a lot of pain, she was discharged the same day.

The woman is distressed because she would have to absorb additional expenses to purchase new school supplies for the girl, including a shirt, shoes and bag that got damaged and a new tie that cost $3,500.
