Family of burnt girl wants trigger-happy cop punished

The family of Lukeisha Clarke, the pregnant woman who was burnt by a wire on Friday, is pleading with the authorities to apply the full force of the law on the officer who fired the shot and caused the incident.

“The government must fire the officer and he must not have to deal with guns anymore,” Jem Belle, Clarke’s aunt told Stabroek News yesterday. She said that she understood that every Friday night the dance would be organized by police officers and would attract a horde of other officers. “Is hustle she does go there to do you know. She trying to make an honest living and that is what happen,” she added.

She explained that she was told by several persons that were at the event at the time of the incident that it was the officer’s birthday and a gun-related song came on to which he subsequently pulled out his gun and started firing several shots in the air.

One of the overhead cables was shot in the process and fell on Clarke and another, Althea McPherson, shocking them.

The two women were subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were admitted and treated. McPherson was subsequently discharged with minor burns but Clarke was further admitted to the burn care unit as she had suffered major burns to her hands, legs and back.

“I heard that they had to knock off the fire from her and it’s just unreal you know.

We are all happy that her and the baby are alright and all we have are prayers right now and that’s what we have been depending on,” Clarke’s mother said.

Clarke is currently still admitted at the Burn Care unit at GPHC and is still on a ventilator since she cannot breathe properly.

The officer is still under close arrest.
