Maduro for Antigua, St Lucia

Keeping up a flurry of Caricom trips, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is to visit Antigua tomorrow and St Lucia on Saturday.

The visits are aimed at cementing ties and hammering out deals but will also see Maduro trying to gather support for Venezuela’s position on the border controversy with Guyana.

Caricom is meant to hold a solid line with Guyana on the controversy but in recent years Venezuela’s oil largesse and other aid has weakened regional bonds. Maduro and other senior Venezuelan officials have visited a number of other Caricom countries in the wake of an escalation of tensions over the border controversy with Guyana.

Yesterday, the office of the Antigua Prime Minister issued a statement announcing Maduro’s visit tomorrow.

The office of the St Lucia Prime Minister also announced Maduro’s visit to Castries on Saturday.

The press release said that while in Saint Lucia, Maduro will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny D. Anthony to discuss ongoing and future areas of cooperation.

The Office of the Prime Minister and the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Saint Lucia are currently finalising a programme of activities for Saturday, the release said.
