Two men suspected to have committed piracy on the high seas last Friday are in police custody after being subdued by alert fishermen.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed on Saturday that the duo is in police custody and that a quantity of seine, a boat and two outboard engines said to have been stolen during the piracy attack have been recovered.
Stabroek News understands a group of fishermen were in the river in the Bushlot, Berbice area when they were attacked by four men who had handkerchiefs tied around their faces. One of them was armed with a gun.
The pirates left the fishermen drifting, escaping with two outboard engines, their fish and seine. A few hours later the fishermen were rescued and they subsequently reported their ordeal to the police.
Later some fishermen were in the same vicinity when they noticed a boat stuck on a mud bank due to the low tide. Suspecting that the two men inside were pirates they held onto them and immediately informed the police.
Investigations are continuing.
