Going tough for Guyanese cyclists in B/dos

Guyana’s representatives had a tough day at the office on Sunday during the grueling 90-mile road race of the Caribbean Elite Cycling Championships which was hosted by Barbados last weekend.

From the four-man team of cyclists, only Orville Hinds (14th) and Michael Anthony (15) completed the sun baked, hilly trek which was won by Jamaican, Marloe Rodman in three hours, 12 minutes and 25 seconds.

Geron Williams and Alanzo Greaves both had a DNF (Did Not Finish) on the results sheet following the event which was held on the Bushy Park Circuit in the parish of St. Phillips.

Guadeloupe’ Luis Sablon (3:12.25.313) placed second, while Martinique’s Yolan Silvestre (3:12.26.618) rounded out the podium. Race favorite Darren Matthews from Barbados suffered mechanical failure in the dying stages of the race and had to settle for fifth.

Meanwhile, Hinds completed the event in a time of three hours, 23 minutes and 53 seconds (3hr:23m.53s), some 11 minutes and 28 seconds off the winner’s time while Anthony recorded a time of three hours, 24 minutes and thirty seconds (3hr:24m:30s).

Notes: Only 16 riders were allowed to finish the event. There were more than 70 starters.

The wheelsmen along with president and secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Horace Burrowes and Maria Leung and official Enzo Matthews returned yesterday.
