Pensioner injured in hit and run says driver had to be speeding

Rampersaud Balgoor, the pensioner who was struck down on Sunday morning during a hit and run at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, says he believes the driver who hit him was speeding at the time.

“It got to be that he was … speeding. That man knock me down from nowhere, I didn’t even see him,” he said.

The driver, Delon Amsterdam, of Lot 161 Friendship, East Coast Demerara, who is attached to Green Ice taxi service remains a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in a critical condition.

At his Second Street, LBI, home yesterday, Balgoor was seated on a chair in his living room. He had bruises about his body and a bandage around his head.

He told Stabroek News that around 6am, on Sunday, he had just left Chateau Margot Chimney compound, where he works as a security guard, for home. He was riding a pedal cycle making his way to the LBI railway embankment when a car hit him from behind, causing him to fall to the road. He said his bicycle was dragged some walking distance away by the car before the driver exited the vehicle, removed it and then left him lying on the road.

The driver, he added, sped east along the embankment road before crashing into the fence of a Lusignan resident.

According to Balgoor, the incident was witnessed by a former traffic police rank, who chased after the driver.

Balgoor was subsequently rushed to the GPH for treatment.

He sustained injuries to one of his shoulders, his feet and a gash in his head which carried eight stitches.

His bicycle was destroyed as were his spectacles and other items he had in his possession at the time he was hit. He wants the driver to compensate him for his losses.

On Monday, Balgoor said, two traffic ranks visited his house while he was resting and informed his daughter that they would return once he recovers to take a statement from him.

James Bharat, whose fence and shed were damaged, has already rebuilt the fence. Like Balgoor he is looking forward to compensation for his other losses, including his minibus, which was damaged when Amsterdam crashed into his property.
