Man held over Campbellville shop gun find

A Campbellville resident is in police custody after police ranks found an unlicensed gun and matching rounds hidden in his shop during a search operation.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that an unlicensed 9 mm pistol and 15 live rounds of matching ammunition were discovered around 5.30 pm at William Street, Campbellville. The man lives at the address and also operates a small grocery shop there.

Stabroek News understands that there are allegations that the man is into illegal activities. As a result of intelligence received, ranks from the Police Narcotics Unit visited the location to conduct a drug search. Though no narcotics were found, ranks discovered the gun.

Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, during the recently-concluded government amnesty, had pleaded with persons to hand in weapons and vowed that harsh penalties will be enforced once the amnesty came to an end.

Ramjattan has said that from now to year end there will be a major crackdown aimed at netting more illegal weapons.
