Dutty pun Dutty build dam

Dear Editor,

I would like you to publish my reflection on the old Guyanese statement ‘Dutty pun Dutty build dam’. Many years ago as a child growing up this statement was very often used. However although I recognized the statement I never gave it much thought.

However, every day I have to travel along Homestretch Avenue to come to my Chambers and I cannot help but noticing the trenches being cleaned and the dirt being used to build a dam. This fact has caused me to think again about the statement ‘Dutty pun Dutty build dam’ and on reflection I cannot but notice how important that statement is and could be applied to several areas of our life.

One of the first things that came to my mind in the newspapers is the Guyanese Policeman in New York who was recently killed on duty. His body is coming home for burial and on the newscast I was amazed at the number of policemen that turned up at the funeral service in New York.

The thought immediately struck me that the Guyana Police Force and the Government should take notice, because policemen are continuously being murdered in Guyana and the most we get is a statement from the Police Commissioner and a publication in the newspapers. I trust that both the Minister of Security and the Commissioner of Police take notice and use what has taken place in New York as an example.

Yours faithfully,

Jonas M.F. Coddett
