Ruimzigt man on murder charge after fatal attack on would-be drinking partner

Sashti Raj, accused of a fatally assaulting a man who tried to drink with him and a friend, was yesterday charged with murder.

Sashti Raj, called ‘Boogie,’ 49, of Ruimzigt, West Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

He was remanded to prison until January 29th, 2016.

It is alleged that between Sunday October 25th, and Monday, October 26th, Raj murdered Omadat ‘Anil’ Shivraj, 33, of 13 Temple Street, Ruimzigt.

Raj and another man were reported to have been drinking in a yard when Shivraj, a habitual drinker, showed up and tried to join them.

They reportedly put him out forcefully and he fell in the process. During this time, the defendant allegedly stomped on his head and Shivraj started to bleed.

Upon seeing this, a couple, at whose place the incident occurred, reportedly lifted him out because they did not want him to bleed there. They too were detained after Shivraj’s death.

Shivraj was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted a patient. However, he escaped from the hospital on the following day and returned home, where he died shortly after.

A post-mortem examination performed on his remains proved that he died as a result of fractured skull and brain haemorrhage. It also proved that he suffocated from the blood.

Shivraj is to be laid to rest on Sunday.
