Gov’t seeks postponement of parliament sitting

The Government has requested that the Sitting of the National Assembly scheduled for November 12th, 2015, be postponed to enable the attendance of MPs at important conferences abroad.

The request for the rescheduling was made yesterday by Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business Moses Nagamootoo to the Speaker, Dr. Barton Scotland.

A release from the Prime Minister’s office said that the request for the rescheduling was made as a result of Guyana’s attendance at the November 9th to 13th Summit of South American-Arab Countries in Saudi Arabia.

The release said that Guyana’s attendance is of vital importance at this time and President David Granger and Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge are to be present.

The Government noted, the release said, that during this period several other key government functionaries, Members of Parliament and Clerks of the Assembly are likely to travel overseas to attend important conferences and training courses.

“In an effort to ensure a full complement of Members of Parliament in the National Assembly, the Leader of Government Business had previously requested that the sitting be brought forward to Monday, November 9th, 2015 but he later withdrew that request to the Honourable Speaker as it did not satisfy the requirement of six days notice for a change of date”, the release said.

The Government expressed regret for requesting the rescheduling of the Sitting of the National Assembly of November 12.

The request for deferral for the attendance at the Saudi Arabian summit underlines the wafer thin one-seat majority held by the government in Parliament.

Were several government MPs absent and the opposition at full strength, no motion brought by the government would succeed once the opposition votes against.
