UK-based woman held at airport with cocaine in rum

A London-based Guyanese woman will be charged today with attempting to smuggle over three kilogrammes of cocaine in bottles of locally-produced rum onto a flight out of the country.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who confirmed the woman’s arrest yesterday, told Stabroek News that the woman was scheduled to leave Guyana around 1 pm on Wednesday on a Caribbean Airlines flight to London. Ranks of the police narcotics unit searched her suitcase and found in excess of two kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in a bottle of 12-year old rum and in excess of one kilogramme in a bottle of 15-year old rum.

The woman was immediately detained and told of the offence committed.
