‘International Day of Service’ sees clean-up activities in several communities

Several communities in Guyana benefited from 30,000 hours of voluntary service provided by different organizations on November 7.

According to a press release from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, some of its members along with various public entities and non-governmental organizations pooled their resources and conducted 14 service projects in observance of the church’s ‘International Day of Service.’

The voluntary service involved mainly community clean-up initiatives and the areas where they were carried out included Berbice, Georgetown, Linden, Diamond, Vreed-en-Hoop and La Grange.

The release said that at Palmyra, tree trunks and lamp posts were painted in an effort to beautify the area. A bus shed was also painted at Number 27 Village while the pedestrian crossing at Vreed-en-Hoop was painted. There was also a blood drive at the New Amsterdam Hospital, and food was distributed in Corriverton.

Some of the organizations which shared the interest and gave support to the church to help others included the Children’s Care Centre at Sophia, the Dorfolk Elderly Centre, the Ruimveldt Children’s Care Centre, Lusignan Women’s Organisation, GuySuCo, Green Urban Visionary, Home Design and Engineering Associates, Hugo Chavez Rehab Centre, Whim Nursery School, New Amsterdam Hospital, Project Hope, Police Traffic Department Rosignol and Virtuous Young Women on a Mission of Linden.

The release said that the annual service initiative started in 2011, when one of the global leaders of the church challenged its members to spend one day in a massive effort to serve others and to provide help wherever it is needed.

According to the release, the church’s National Director of Public Affairs Rowena Bowen said the initiative was not limited to Guyana but will span across the Caribbean, with over 120 projects in 29 countries.

Part of its objective is to unite people of good will in a common effort.
