‘Wor’, ‘war’ or ‘waaahr’

Dear Editor,

I read an interesting letter written by Joyce Sinclair under the caption, ‘Let us help in any small way we can. This is our country.’ It was published by Kaieteur News, November 9. It left me in a quagmire, that is, I am not certain of the correct pronunciation of the word ‘war’. I can vividly recall that over five decades ago my head teacher instilled in my classmates and me that the correct pronunciation of the word is ‘wor’ and not ‘war’ or ‘waaahr’. It has an ‘o’ sound.

Over the past few days I listened to several speakers on BBC, CNN and Aljazeera. All the presenters pronounced the word ‘wor’ and not ‘war’ or ‘waaahr’.

Perhaps, another Joyce, Dr Joyce Jonas can say whether or not I was caught in the slips about fifty years ago. Then again, it may just be a small way of expressing myself.

Yours faithfully
