Teen on bail after denying cellphone robbery

A youth was on Monday accused of robbing a man of a $100,000 phone and then selling it for just $3,000.

Adrian Harry, 17, of Wortmanville, denied a charge of robbery when it was read to him by city magistrate Judy Latchman, who subsequently set bail at $100,000.

It is alleged that on November 11th, Harry stole a Blu cellphone, valued at $100,000, from Detroy Bacchus.

According to the prosecution, Bacchus and the accused have been known to each other for over five years. The court heard that on the day of the robbery, Bacchus was walking home when Harry approached him and asked for $200. When Bacchus told the accused that he did not have any money on him, the accused then allegedly grabbed the cell phone from the complainant’s shirt pocket.

On the next day, when Bacchus and his father went to retrieve the cell phone from the accused, Harry allegedly told them that he sold the phone for $3,000 under the Stabroek Market clock. Upon hearing this, the complainant and his father contacted the police and the accused was subsequently arrested.

Contrary to the facts given by the prosecution, Harry, who was without a lawyer, said that he never asked the complainant for money and he never stole his phone.

The prosecution had no objections to bail being granted and it was granted with the condition that Harry report to the court every Monday. The matter will be called again on November 30th for statements.
