13-year-old loses cancer battle

Thirteen-year-old Shakiva Clements, who was battling bone cancer, passed away last Thursday.

The teen died at her home and remained positive up to the time of her passing as she was speaking to relatives, her grandmother, Marva Clements, told Stabroek News.

Shakiva, a Tutorial High School student, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma earlier this year. One of her arms was amputated as a result.

After her discharge from the hospital, she was again admitted in October. Relatives later learnt that both of the child’s lungs had collapsed.

Her grandmother cared for her up to the time of her passing because Shakiva’s mother was shot dead by her reputed husband, Brian McCollin, in July, 2005. The man later turned the gun on himself.
