In a statement, the police said the incident occurred at about 4.40 am yesterday. The police said that Bess was driving a car along the Ruimzight public road when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

He sustained injuries and succumbed while receiving medical attention at the GPH. Mounter also sustained injuries and was admitted to the GPH, the police said.

The statement added that Eshwar Deochand, 30, of La Grange, WBD, who was driving the other vehicle in the collision and three-year-old Nayesha Nandalall, who was in the vehicle, sustained injuries and have been hospitalized.

Four other persons who were in the vehicle were treated and sent away. Investigations are in progress.

When Stabroek News contacted Bess’ father yesterday, he related that his son had left home on Christmas night to go to a party. He said his son was apparently returning from the party when the incident occurred.

The man said he was told that his son was attempting to overtake a vehicle and another vehicle tried to overtake at the same time and the two overtaking vehicles collided.

The other vehicle was apparently heading to Parika at the time. Bess Sr said his son was pinned in the vehicle for one and a half hours and they had to call a fire tender to assist in getting him out. Bess was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and then transferred to the GPH where he succumbed hours later without regaining consciousness.

The man said his son was a supervisor at his construction company, Bess Investments.
