Teachers settle assault charges out of court

Assault charges against two primary school teachers were dismissed yesterday after they decided to settle the matter out of court.

The court heard that Shonet Vyphuis, 37, of 107 Pike Street, Kitty and Samantha Gouviea,33, of 45 Princes Street, Lodge were charged separately with unlawful assault committed on each other at St. Sidwell’s Primary School on October 30th, 2015. Both Vyphuis and Govuviea pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Representing the two teachers was a member of the Guyana Teachers Union, who told the court that the wishes of the two women were to settle the matter out of court and for it to be dealt with departmentally.

The representative also mentioned that as a result of the assault, the two women were already transferred out of St. Sidwell’s Primary and relocated to other primary schools.

After hearing the matter, Magistrate Annette Singh granted the petition made by the two teachers and dismissed the cases.
