Rice farmer found dead in canal

The body of a 51-year-old rice farmer of Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast was found floating in a canal in the vicinity of Golden Fleece backdam a few hours after he went missing.

According to information, the man who was later identified as Khamraj called ‘Derick’ or ‘Dan’ left his home on Tuesday to go to his rice field, but did not tell his wife Omawattie Khamraj.

The body of the man was later seen floating by residents of the area, who alerted his family and the police.

This newspaper was told that the man would often suffer from seizures due to epilepsy and it is suspected that he might have had an attack and fallen into the canal.

The body was picked up and taken to the Suddie Funeral Parlour where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
