Carpenter gets bail on fraudulent conversion charge

A carpenter was charged yesterday after allegedly misusing money he was given to buy pipes.

Trevor Braithwaite pleaded not guilty when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 on a charge of fraudulent conversion.

Braithwaite, 49, of 3 Miles, Bartica, was accused of fraudulently converting $280,000 that was entrusted to him by Wanda Amon to buy PVC pipes on November 17, 2014 at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.

The prosecution objected to bail given the fact that Braithwaite has a pending matter at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where he had been placed on $30,000 bail. However, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set bail at $60,000 with the condition that Braithwaite report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday starting on May 15, 2015. He is also due appear today at the Providence Magistrate’s Court for a hearing.
