Anna Regina accident victim dies

Ganganan Dhanraj, the 58-year old man, who was struck down, allegedly by a drunk driver, last Friday died at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday.

Ganganan Dhanraj was walking on the left side of the road in the Anna Regina New Housing Scheme, when he was struck down, his son Lalchand Dhanraj had said.A distressed Lalchand Dhanraj said the driver’s family contacted him yesterday to offer a financial settlement.

He said it is wrong for the family to contact him after his father just died, while adding that a price cannot be placed on his father’s head.

Dhanraj said the family is stressed out over the untimely death of his father and cannot deal with the influence that the rich have over the poor. “I is a poor man, I can’t deal with this now,” Dhanraj said sadly.

He said the driver of the vehicle had showed the police a different spot where the crowd had initially gathered when the accident occurred and they ignored him when he pointed it out.

He said eyewitnesses are not coming forward with information because they don’t want “any story.”

Lalchand had said there was a rumour going around that his father had an epileptic seizure, but he disputed this. He said a lot of people in the area witnessed the accident.

In addition, he said he had observed the driver at the hospital “staggering” and he believed this was a sign of intoxication. However, the police did not carry out a breathalyzer test at the scene and promised to do it “later,” he said, adding that he was worried the driver might escape charges.
