Courts awards UG scholarships to medical, technology students

Three students will be pursuing studies in medicine and technology at the University of Guyana (UG) as the recipients of Courts Guyana’s inaugural scholarship programme.

The scholarship awar-dees are Jamein Hatton, Akilla Whitney and Ron Ghanie.

At an award ceremony yesterday, Courts Guyana Customer Experience Manager Shonelle Bacchus, who is tasked with corporate responsibility and is the head of the programme, said it was difficult to select the awardees.

She did not disclose the number of applicants but revealed that there was a high volume of responses. She noted that the programme was open to persons pursuing studies in all fields.

There are plans to expand the programme next year to award more students, she added.

Hatton, who is currently a third-year student pursuing a Degree in Medical Technology, had learnt of the scholarship but was not going to apply. However, he was persuaded by his mother to do so and she looked on yesterday as he praised her and Courts for investing in youth. He plans on a career as a cardiologist.

Whitney, who is presently a first-year Biology student, hopes of one day becoming a neurosurgeon. She said her goal is to work hard to be admitted into the medical programme next year.

Meanwhile, Ghanie is balancing first year studies in Information Technology and teaching fulltime at the Three Miles Secondary School, at Bartica. He teaches Integrated Science, Chemistry, Biology and Accounts. He is grateful that he can do both because of the online courses now being offered by the University of Guyana.

Among other things, applicants for the scholarships were required to have a current account with Courts, demonstrated the need for financial assistance through an interview process, and a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above and an essay. The scholars will receive automatic scholarships once they maintain a 3.0 GPA.
