Police files on accused in attack on judge still incomplete

The police yesterday reported that their files on the five men who are accused of robbing Land Court Judge Nicola Pierre and her husband remain incomplete.

As a result, another adjournment was granted yesterday.

Damion Millington, Anthony David, Nicholas Narine, and Premnauth Samaroo were accompanied by the most recent person charged with the crime, Warren McKenzie, when the matter was called at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

While the court was supposed to hear the evidence against the five men yesterday, following an earlier application for bail by a lawyer for one of the accused, the prosecution requested another adjournment, due to the files not being completed. The court was also told that after the files are completed they will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

At the previous hearing, the court had been told that the case files were with the DPP.

In addition, while the prosecution had stated at the last hearing that David had orally confessed to being the driver of the car that transported the group of men to and from the home of Pierre and her husband, Mohamed Chand, no records were presented to verify the claim as had been promised.

McKenzie, who was only charged almost two weeks ago, had been hospitalised after he was shot during his arrest when police carried out a raid at Craig, East Bank Demerara house. McKenzie was allegedly found with a gun whose spent shells matched the ones that were recovered at the scene of the attack on the judge.

The five men were charged with robbing Justice Pierre and Chand of millions in cash and valuables at their Felicity, East Coast Demerara home on July 9th and discharging a loaded firearm at security guard Raul Peters.

Magistrate Zamilla Ally adjourned the case to October 27, when a report is once again due.
