An East La Penitence man was yesterday sentenced to the next six months in jail after he admitted to stealing his daughter’s jewellery in order to clear a debt.
Richard Binns, 50, pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who handed down the sentence afterward in Georgetown.
Binns, an employee of Pritipaul Singh Fisheries, admitted that he stole a quantity of gold and silver jewellery, valued $103,000 and belonging to Meryl Fraser, on November 10th, at Second Street, Meadow Bank, Georgetown.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Binns, who was at Fraser’s home, requested something to eat and it was given to him. Jones said Fraser subsequently went about doing her chores and later went into her bedroom, but she saw Binns exiting. Upon making checks, she discovered the jewellery missing from her jewellery box. As a result, she immediately began to search around the house for Binns, who had already left. A report was made to the police and Binns was arrested and he admitted to taking the jewellery. He told police he had debts to pay so he took the jewellery with intention of repaying Fraser. The items were not recovered.
“My honour, that is the truth and I already take it… I had some money for a man and I did going and sell it and then repay she but the police arrest and charge me and I never get the opportunity to do that,” Binns told the court before sentencing.
