Businessman shot at cops, civilian

A businessman was on Tuesday charged with shooting at two policemen and a civilian but his lawyer told a city court that he thought he was being robbed.

It is alleged that Ola Pedro, 40, of Lot 61 West Ruimveldt, discharged a loaded firearm at Police Constables Gordon Smith and Owen Holder, as well as at Ryan Spencer on December 4th, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to Pedro’s attorney, his client is the owner of the Ballaz Sports Bar and persons attempted to rob the establishment, which resulted in shots being fired by the accused. The attorney said Pedro sustained injuries to his right arm due to a drinks case being shattered.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones, however, stated that the police constables were responding to a report of threats made by the defendant. He stated that Pedro pulled out the firearm and discharged at the ranks and Spencer. He added that the ranks retreated and returned fire.

Pedro was subsequently arrested two days later.

Pedro was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned to January 12th, 2016 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
