Double murder rocks Tobago…British lawyer and real estate agent hacked to death

(Trinidad Guardian) The quiet, middleclass community of Carnbee has been shocked with a double murder. The victims were identified as attorney Richard Wheeler, 72, and his wife Grace, a real estate agent  63, both nationals of the United Kingdom.

According to police reports, the couple was discovered by their gardener around 11 am yesterday at their home at Riseland Gardens. T&T Guardian are told that female victim was found on the lawn of the premises, and a report was immediately made at the Old Grange Police Station. When police arrived on the scene, the man was found in the living room motionless.  Police have described the scene as “gruesome” and “very bloody.”

A senior police source revealed that the woman’s throat was slit, while the male victim suffered multiple chops about the body.

Police believe that robbery may have been the motive, as the house was ransacked. Neighbours told the T&T Guardian that the couple had been robbed seven times in the past, the latest being earlier this year.

The house is also outfitted with an alarm system monitored by TSTT’s Blink Vigilance. They also have dogs for protection.

The couple was last seen alive on Monday evening by neighbours.

Wheeler was a senior partner with Lex Caribbean, specialising in Conveyance and Property Law, based in Tobago while his wife was a real estate agent with Island Investments, based in Tobago. This brings Tobago’s murder toll to seven for the year.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Law Association called for an immediate and through investigation into the double murder and called on the public to assist the police in providing the necessary information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
