Five overseas-based players named in CARICOM B/ball squad

The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has officially shortlisted its provisional squad to prepare for the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, scheduled for Tortola, British Virgin Islands from June 13th-22nd.

According to an official press release from the GABF, Akeem Kanhai has been named captain of the team which comprises local players, Dave Causeway, Travis Burnette, Shelroy Thomas, Nikkoloi Smith, Terron Welch, Jason Squires, Harold Adams, Ryan Gullen, Jermaine Slater, Chris Williams, Dominic Vincente, Rudy James, Royston Siland, Kurt Elias and Shane Webster. Five overseas-based players, Keron McKenzie, Ray Victor, Gordon Klaiber, Delroy James and John Ashley are also included in the squad.

their availability. They are expected on local scores on June 1st to begin preparation with the squad.

According to the release, Darcel Harris will continue in his position as Head-Coach while Marlon Rodrigues will serve as his Assistant. Troy Greene is the Team Manager while Junior Hercules will serve as his Assistant.

“Practice sessions continue at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sundays from 8:00 – 12:00 hours and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 20:00 – 23:00 hours,” the release stated.

Guyana, in their most recent international series, lost 1-2 to CBC rival Suriname in the Dutch nation. Prior to their Surinamese tour, Guyana swept another CBC rival in Bermuda 3-0 at home in the month of March.

The respective series were part of the country’s preparation for the upcoming championship. For the championships Guyana is grouped with Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda.

The two top teams in the group will qualify for the final four section. Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation.
