GBA selects team for Pan Am Games qualifiers

Once sponsorship is garnered, five Guyanese boxers will aim to fight their way into acclaim at the Pan American Games when they contest the Games qualifier in Tijuana, Mexico in July.

“We have selected a team to go to the Pan Am Qualifiers in Tijuana, Mexico from July 4 to 9” said president of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle on Saturday.

Ninvalle added “The team selected in order of priority is Dennis Thomas, Dellon Charles, Jason Phillips, Dawani Lampkin and US based Quincy ‘Biggie’ Small.”

According to the GBA head, the local based pugilists will be encamped at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis gym from Thursday.

The boxers’ encampment along with their participation in Mexico will obviously come at a cost for the cash strapped association but Ninvalle highlighted that “we will be seeking sponsorship for this team to go to Tijuana.”

Sebert Blake and Francisco Hernandez Roldan will coach the outfit. Blake will also undertake the duties of manager.

The 2015 Pan American Games will take place in Toronto, Ontario, from July 10-26, and feature 36 Pan American-recognized summer sports.
