Heavyweights Alpha United were held to a 1-1 draw by home side Monedderlust FC when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued on Saturday at the No. #5 ground in Berbice.
Delon Lanferman gave the visitors the early lead in the sixth minute, slotting home into the right hand corner of the net past the advancing custodian within the box, after racing onto a through pass from Dwayne Lawrence following a swift counterattack.
Nonetheless, the home side would eventually earn a share of the spoils as Seon Jackman scored,turning and blasting his effort through the sea of players within the box into the net, after the ball fell fortuitously into his path following a botched clearance from a cross.
Due to the result, Alpha United move onto 13 points and remain in the second position. On the other hand, the Berbice outfit move onto seven points and remain in the fifth position.
In the earlier fixture, Vergenoegen unit Slingerz FC edged Fruta Conquerors by a 1-0 score line. Tichard Joseph settled the outcome in the 58th minute from the penalty spot following a handball infraction.
Joseph clinically converted his right-footed effort past the diving Alex Murray into the left hand corner of the net to seal the hard-fought contest.
The Georgetown unit were not without their chances as Eon Alleyne was denied by the keeper in the 33rd minute following a one-on-one situation within the box after collecting a through-pass.
With the win, Slingerz FC moves to 12 points and remain in the third position while the Georgetown unit remains on eight points and in the fourth position.
Action in the event will continue tomorrow with another doubleheader slated to be held at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, Fruta Conquerors will oppose Monedderlust while GDF will tackle Buxton United from 20:30hrs.
Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth-place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the points leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
