Police investigating if Pyle was trailing a vehicle when he crashed

The Guyana Police Force says that while it received a report of a car being trailed shortly after the car crash involving army intelligence officer Robert Pyle, they are investigating to ascertain if the two incidents are connected.

Kaieteur News reported that Pyle, who was killed on New Year’s Eve in a two vehicle smash-up that claimed the lives of three persons, was chasing a vehicle during a special operation. It said that Pyle was part of a team that was in the vicinity of the residence of Winston Brassington, Chief Executive Officer of the National Industrial Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

The paper went on to report that the son of a businessman who was in a car with his sister was approached by Pyle in Cowan Street in Kingston, who said he was a member of the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU), and ordered the businessman’s son not to move his car. Out of fear, it was reported, he manoeuvred his vehicle out of a blockade formed by two cars, one of which was Pyle’s, and drove away, eventually reaching Carifesta Avenue. He was still being followed by the cars when Pyle crashed into a canter truck.

While the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has confirmed that Pyle indeed worked in the army Intelligence Unit, which Stabroek News understands sometimes partners with SOCU, it was not sure if he was at the time on duty or a part of any intelligence gathering mission.

Police Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that the report at the Kitty Police Station after the accident about a car being trailed was “very vague” and the person did not say if it was Pyle’s car which was involved, or provide a number plate for the vehicle. As such, he explained, the police would once again question the person as they continued to investigate the matter.

Kaieteur News had also reported an official as saying that SOCU’s operatives had been staking out the Brassington location when they observed two persons leaving a property linked to Brassington, one of whom they mistook for his daughter. A source close to Brassington dismissed the report that his children were targeted since if any intelligence agency was investigating Brassington they would know that his children do not live in Guyana, and this was the reason for him spending his vacation leave with them in the United States.

The Guyana Police Force says that it is aware that Brassington is currently out of the country.
