Pregnant Lonsdale minor, adult lover commit suicide after eloping

Two lovers, forbidden from seeing each other, eloped and their bodies were found hanging in a house at Lonsdale, East Berbice yesterday.

Dead are Deraj Persaud, 20, a labourer, and Sherryann Ali, 14, who was said to be two months pregnant. Their bodies were discovered just after 7:30am yesterday by a relative at the Lonsdale home.

Stabroek News was told that the two were in a relationship for just over a year. Ali had quit school.

According to information received, Ali was in foster care with a family in Brothers village, where she apparently met Persaud who lives in the neighbouring village,

Lonsdale. Persaud reportedly lived alone and this newspaper was told that the couple lived together for two months. Stabroek News understands that the couple committed suicide at a relative’s home.

According to reports, Ali was two months pregnant at the time of her demise. The couple was expected to appear before the probation officer in New Amsterdam today.

Due to her age, Ali and Persaud were barred from seeing each other. However, she escaped from her house via a window in her bedroom between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. A report was made to the Sisters’ police station.

During a search, the bodies were discovered dangling from a roof. Police were summoned and they were cut down and transported to the Arokium Funeral Parlour.

Persaud and Ali were reportedly the third of seven children for their respective families but from a young age, they grew up in foster care.
