Teen remanded over second attack on stepfather

A teen was remanded to prison on Wednesday after being once again charged with using violence against his stepfather.

The Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court heard that Joshua Singh, 17, of Success, East Coast Demerara, on January 5, assaulted and made use of threatening language to his stepfather, Ivan McMullen.

Singh pleaded guilty to the assault charge and not guilty to the threatening language charge.

According to the police prosecutor, Singh and his stepfather had an argument and McMullen asked him to leave the house. Singh’s refusal to abide by the request to leave the home prompted McMullen to go into his room and call the police.

However, when Singh heard that his stepfather was on the phone with the police, he kicked down the door and dealt the man several cuffs to his face. Singh also confronted McMullen with a piece of wood and threatened him. McMullen, who was in fear of his stepson, made a report to the police station, the prosecutor added.

Singh, when given a chance to speak, said that he never hit McMullen with the wood or threatened him.

The prosecutor later reminded the court that it was not Singh’s first attempt to hurt his stepfather. Last year, Singh was charged with unlawfully wounding to McMullen and was granted his release on $15,000 bail, which was eventually paid by McMullen.

Upon hearing this, Magistrate Zamilla Ally remanded Singh to prison. His next appearance in court will be on February 29.
