Pastor suspects robbers were known persons

Pastor Rohit Deonarine, who was chopped along with his wife Nirmala Deonarine during a robbery on Friday evening, says he believes their attackers were known to them.

At around 7.30 pm on Friday, three bandits attacked the pastor and his wife at their Lot 481 12th Street, Foulis home and escaped with approximately $100,000.

Speaking to Stabroek News via telephone yesterday, Deonarine explained that his assailants were “all masked up and only their eyes were showing.” This, he said, led him to believe that the men are known persons.

Deonarine added that his wife is recuperating slowly. He noted that she was badly beaten to her face and sustained wounds to her head, which required stiches.

Deonarine, who is the pastor of the Enmore Baptist Church, also operates a grocery at his residence. He had explained that he was preparing to leave home to attend a prayer session when he was attacked. He recalled that he had just parked his car and was about to head back inside to retrieve his bible when he was approached by a man, who appeared to be holding a gun.

Deonarine said after realising that he was being held up, he shouted for help and the men hit him to his head.

He stated that his wife, after being assaulted by the men, eventually revealed that there was money hidden under a chair in the house.

By the time the bandits retrieved the money hidden from under the chair and escaped, an alarm was raised by the couple’s young daughter, who was upstairs during the attack.

Police investigators later recovered two toy guns from the crime scene.
